Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) bill calculator

To calculate your electricity bill in Sri Lanka, you need to understand the tariff structure applied by the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) or Lanka Electricity Company (LECO). Electricity charges depend on your consumption level and whether you fall under the domestic, industrial, or general purpose category. Here’s a step-by-step guide:

Calculate your CEB electricity bill here

Step 1: Check Your Meter Reading

  • Note your current meter reading and the previous meter reading (found on your last bill).
  • Subtract the previous reading from the current reading to determine your consumption in kilowatt-hours (kWh) for the billing period.

Example:

  • Current reading: 450 kWh
  • Previous reading: 400 kWh
  • Consumption: 450 – 400 = 50 kWh

Step 2: Understand the Tariff Rates

CEB and LECO have a tiered tariff system, where the rate per kWh increases with higher consumption. The tariff categories include:

  1. Fixed Charge: A monthly fee based on your total consumption.
  2. Energy Charge: Calculated based on the number of kWh used within specific tiers.
  3. Fuel Adjustment Charge: Additional percentage applied to energy charges (may vary).

For example, as per the Domestic Tariff (2024) for monthly usage:

  • 0-30 kWh: Rs. 8 per kWh (low tier)
  • 31-60 kWh: Rs. 10 per kWh
  • Above 60 kWh: Rs. 15 per kWh

Step 3: Calculate the Energy Charge

Break down your consumption by tiers and multiply by the applicable rates.

Example for 75 kWh Consumption:

  1. First 30 kWh @ Rs. 8 = 30 × 8 = Rs. 240
  2. Next 30 kWh @ Rs. 10 = 30 × 10 = Rs. 300
  3. Remaining 15 kWh @ Rs. 15 = 15 × 15 = Rs. 225

Total Energy Charge = Rs. 240 + Rs. 300 + Rs. 225 = Rs. 765

Step 4: Add Fixed and Other Charges

  • Fixed Charge: Rs. 90 for consumption under 90 kWh.
  • Fuel Adjustment Charge: Add a percentage of the energy charge (e.g., 10%).

Example:

  • Energy Charge = Rs. 765
  • Fixed Charge = Rs. 90
  • Fuel Adjustment (10% of Rs. 765) = Rs. 76.50

Total Bill = Rs. 765 + Rs. 90 + Rs. 76.50 = Rs. 931.50

Step 5: Consider Additional Charges (if any)

Depending on your location and provider, additional service taxes or late payment fees may apply.

Tips for Managing Your Electricity Bill

  1. Monitor Usage: Use energy-efficient appliances and switch off devices when not in use.
  2. Switch to LED Bulbs: They consume significantly less power.
  3. Solar Options: Consider installing solar panels to reduce dependency on the grid.

For accurate calculations, refer to the latest tariff rates available on the CEB or LECO official websites or your recent electricity bill. If needed, use their online calculators or contact customer service for assistance.
